The renewable energy producer Nelja Energia and the Hiiu municipality on western Estonia’s Hiiumaa Island signed a cooperation agreement on Monday to build Estonia’s first offshore wind farm, and according to the company the wind farm will help reach the European Union’s renewable energy goals.

“The economies of Estonia and the Hiiumaa Island both have a lot to gain here and the cooperation agreement that was signed just now provides concrete numbers and activities for the residents of the Hiiumaa Island,” CEO of Nelja Energia Martin Kruus said in a press release.

According to Kruus, the technical side of the project is being prepared and the company is also holding talks with EU member states with help from the Estonian government as the offshore wind farm could meet the EU’s 2020 renewable energy goals. He added that the project is on schedule.

Nelja Energia is planning to build a 700-1,100 megawatt wind farm in the sea off the northern Coast of the island of Hiiumaa for up to two billion euros.
