Estonian Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kadri Simson will be in Vilnius on Tuesday, where she is to discuss the synchronization of Baltic energy grids with Western Europe, cooperation possibilities in the field of renewable energy and developments of the regional gas market with Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas.

“I am glad that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have moved strongly forward to connect energy networks with Western Europe. It is important for Estonia that the synchronization increases our energy security, ensures a sufficient security of supply and does not restrict energy trade with other EU member states. Studies carried out so far indicate that to fulfil those conditions we along with the existing one need an additional connection between Poland and Lithuania. This will ensure sufficient connection, the functioning of the electricity market and there will be no need for additional and costly reserve capacities,” the minister said. “To ensure the support of the European Union for building the grids, we must reach a joint solution by the end of June of this year, when the results of the ongoing studies will be clear,” she added.

The minister said that a single gas market must also be moved forward with, which will increase competition between various sellers. “Estonia is of the opinion that the gas market must function in a market based manner, we after all have a positive experience with the creation of a single electricity market. New connections like Balticconnector, the gas pipeline between Lithuania and Poland and ports along the Baltic Sea that have a LNG (liquefied natural gas) import capacity ensure a sufficient stable offer and security of supply. After the completion of the Lithuania-Poland gas connection, our interest is to ensure the equal competition between pipe gas and LNG on the Baltic gas market,” Simson said.

As a new topic, Simson and Vaiciunas will discuss cooperation in the field of renewable energy. “The European Union by the end of the year is expecting the member states to present action plans for achieving energy and climate goals. In light of drawing up the plans, I wish to discuss cooperation possibilities with Lithuania for example in developing wind energy. The biomass stock exchange has also launched well in Lithuania, which is also a good initiative for cooperation across member states,” the minister said.

Simson in Vilnius will also meet with representatives of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania.
