Electricity production up by nearly a half last year
Estonian newsSeptember 13, 2011
Baltic News Service, 13.09.2011
Estonian power plants produced nearly 13,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) electricity in 2010, nearly a half more than the year before, Statistics Estonia said.
After an interim period of fall electricity generation climbed back to the 2007 level in 2010.
Electricity generation mainly grew due to opening of free markets and animation of the domestic economy. As more than 90 percent of electricity is produced from oil shale then increased demand grew the need for oil shale production by more than 20 percent.
Generation of electricity from renewable energy sources nearly doubled compared with 2009. Implementation of combination power plants fuelled by wood chips influenced growth in the renewable energy most.
Although the share of hydro and wind electricity was still small in the total power generation, or less than 3 percent, development in that sphere was remarkable. In 2010 generation of wind energy grew by more than 40 percent compared with the year before. Production of hydroelectrical energy has been stable during the last three years.
Last year oil shale production grew due to the consumption of local boiler-houses by nearly 8 percent. Production of wood pellets was 7 percent and of fuel peat production more than 10 percent higher than in 2009.
