EWEA Blog: Offshore wind can provide the missing pieces in the energy and climate puzzle
EWPA's blogJanuary 11, 2012
By Tuuliki Kasonen, General Manager, Estonian Wind Power Association
Offshore wind energy is an innovative new industry, which by creating thousands of jobs and intensive investments gives Europe a necessary impulse for economic growth. It can also provide the missing pieces in the energy and climate puzzle that Europe needs to solve urgently. What I brought home from EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 – the world’s largest offshore wind energy event – was the feeling that the next decade will be crucial for bringing down the costs and filling some gaps to make this type of energy production a really competitive one. Wind turbines have become a symbol of clean energy
EWPA's blogNovember 11, 2011
If you type green, clean, modern, renewable or wind energy into a google images search the results are mainly images of wind power plants and farms, told Werner Nystrand, the Swedish photographer, who spoke at last month’s Wind Power Conference in Tallinn and who takes breathtakingly beautiful pictures of wind power plants and their surroundings. Wind Energy Conference starting in Tallinn
EWPA's blogOctober 19, 2011
Two-day Wind Energy Conference in Tallinn starts tomorrow, on the 20th of October. More than 20 experts step up to speak about wind power, more than half of them come from abroad. Estonian Wind Power Association is glad that its 10th anniversary is celebrated with the first international conference dedicated to wind energy in Estonia. The event is organized in cooperation with the Swedish Wind Energy Association (SVIF) and supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). Loe edasi »
EWEA BLOG: Electric vehicles and wind energy could be ‘perfect match’
EWPA's blogSeptember 2, 2011
A new report has found that wind power in Alberta, the Canadian province facing global criticism for its highly-polluting oil sands fossil fuel projects, could be the perfect match for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).
Wind turbines create more power at night, when winds tend to be stronger in Alberta. Meanwhile most commuters do not drive at night so that is when they could charge their cars. If grid operators in Alberta could divert more wind energy for recharging electric cars at night then significant energy and emissions savings would result, the report noted. Loe edasi »
EU wind power will triple by 2020
EWPA's blogAugust 3, 2011
The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) published its scenarios for onshore and offshore wind power deployment in the EU. The report foresees that wind energy will more than triple its power output by 2020 with 194 billion Euros invested in European onshore and offshore wind farms in this decade. Electricity production from wind power is expected to increase from 182 Terawatt hours (TWh) or 5.5% of the total EU demand in 2010, to 581 TWh or 15.7% of the total demand in 2020. Loe edasi »
ABB Group will connect North Sea wind farms with Germany
EWPA's blogAugust 3, 2011
ABB, power and automation technology group, has won the largest power transmission order in its history worth around $1 billion to supply a power link connecting offshore North Sea wind farms to the German mainland grid.
Scheduled to be operational in 2015, this 900MW offshore network called DolWin 2 will both supply more than 1.5 million households with clean wind-generated electricity and also help to avoid more than three million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year by replacing fossil-fuel based generation. The completed link will be capable of Germany’s installed wind power capacity of over 27 GW presently meets about eight percent of its electricity requirements. Plans are to double that by 2020. „Offshore wind power is emerging as a major source of large-scale renewable energy in Europe to help meet emission targets and lower environmental impact,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division Loe edasi »
EWEA BLOG: Estonia’s “wired” Global Wind Day
EWPA's blogJune 20, 2011
By Tuuliki Kasonen, General Manager of Estonian Wind Power Association
Ever heard of people saying “life is nowadays happening online”? Well, that’s where the Global Wind Day took place in Estonia this year. The key activities were fun video clips going viral in social media combined with an online interview where people were able to ask everything about wind energy. We handed out flower seeds at the Ehituse ABC (Building ABC) stores but for that single physical action that took place in four cities we also had a home-made video of how to plant those seeds.
